The Maldivian archipelago is a chain of more than 1200 tiny tropical islands; each island is surrounded by its own coral reef, enclosing a beautiful shallow lagoon. The islands are grouped into ring shaped reefs called atolls, and it is this environment that provided a profusion of marine life.
The reef life of the Maldives is prolific with over 700 different types of fish and invertebrate species reckoned to be in their tens of thousands. The manta rays, whale sharks and pelagic life are amazing and for the sharp-eyed diver there are encounters with species such as frogfish, leaf fish, ghost pipe fish and a multitude of nudibranchs.
A liveaboard holiday gets you the best of the diving, but consider a combination of a live aboard with a resort island and you have the ideal blend of diving and relaxation.
