Matava Eco Resort
Island At A Glance
Matava is a fabulous boutique resort located on the southern side of Kadavu Island and on the doorstep of the Great Astrolabe Reef which offers brilliant oceanic diving.
Kadavu is Fiji's fourth largest island situated 100km south of the main island of Viti Levu and a short domestic flight from the International Airport at Nadi.
Matava is off the beaten track and we think well worth the journey; the resort is well managed, has a wonderful atmosphere, is simple and stylish and has access to some of the best diving in the South pacific.
The Great Astrolabe Reef is one of the largest barrier reefs in the world and with its numerous narrow channels offers wonderful diving and the chance to see big pelagic species in big numbers.
This resort is run with the environment in mind; the rooms do not have mains electricity and are solar powered for both light and hot water.
They have a recycling policy, try to use as many locally made items as possible and they have a program of development for the local villages, schools and community.
Restaurants & Bars
The bar and restaurant at Matava overlooks the sea and are surrounded by the tropical gardens of Kadavu. It has a wonderful ambiance and guests can enjoy their meals with the amazing chorus of life from the rainforest canopy.
The food is superb, fresh and varied. Matava has its own organic garden to ensure the freshest and best possible quality fruit and vegetables.
A full board meal plan is offered with a continental breakfast, lunch and a three course dinner.
One a week there is a lovo feast, a traditional Fijian meal cooked in the ground, and usually accompanied by a kava session !
The menu caters for vegetarians and the resort will try and be flexible to accommodate dietary requests.
There is no shortage of activities at Matava Resort. Sea Kayaking is one of the favourites with a range of tours on offer from a one day expedition with lunch at a traditional Fijian village, to a longer two day trip with an overnight stay giving you the opportunity to experience the culture of the hospitable Fijians.
Whether you take a kayak or walk, a visit to the local village is not to be missed; the villagers are amazingly friendly and it's a heart warming experience to hear a Fijian village choir.
Snorkelling is available in the areas immediately infront of the resort which has been designated a marine reserve. Snorkelling equipment can be hired from the dive centre and they also offer boat trips for snorkellers to the Great Astrolabe Reef.
Matava is a great place for birdwatching as they have 27 endemic bird species and a wide variety of habitats. Guides are available to take you on organised treks to search out the Kadavu and other Fijian endemics.
Having snorkelled, dived, kayaked and trekked you might then like to enjoy being pampered at The Bamboo Spa which offers a wonderful range of massages, body wraps and facial treatments sure to relax and restore.
Diving is run by the PADI five star Mad Fish Dive Centre that operates three aluminum boats that each take divers on 2 tank dive excursions. The most usual dive format is to do three dives a day with two in the morning and one in the afternoon. They also offer a three tank dive trip to the Northern Astrolabe Reefs. The centre offers a broad range of PADI courses from Discover Scuba to Padi Divemaster.
Matava is located right in the middle of the Great Astrolabe Reef and close to two of the main channels where oceanic waters flow into the shallow water lagoon that fringes the main island of Kadavu. The best diving is found on the outer reefs and at mouths of these narrow ocean passes where visibility can be more than 30 meters. Here, the strong ocean current bring the pelagic species close to the reef and they feed on fish hiding in the passes. Watch this show and then let go and enjoy and amazing drift dive in through the pass. On the outer reef there is less current and there are a number of amazing dive sites with hard and soft corals, caverns and drop-offs.
One of the highlights of the diving from Matava is a year-round manta point which is a cleaning station for these enormous and magnificent animals and they say they have an 80% success rate of encounter with the mantas on this site. With 120km of pristine reef, superb boats and just a handful of divers, the opportunities for exploratory diving are immense and we think this resort has something to offers all levels of diver.
