The stunning Bahamas, with its white sandy beaches and beautiful turquoise waters, is an island chain of over 700 coral Islands and cays. It is not, as many people think, part of the Caribbean but a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.

The island chain of the Bahamas is just 50 miles from the Florida coast and and lies north east of Cuba in the North Atlantic Ocean. The Islands stretch more than 700km from west to east, with only about 30 of the larger islands being inhabited.  The capital city is Nassau which is located on New Providence Island and other Islands include Grand Bahama, Andros, Cat Island, San Salvador, Abaco and Eleuthera.

Discovered by Christopher Colombus in 1492 and colonised by the British in 1718, the Bahamas is part of the Commonwealth and has a rich and colourful history with it's culture, beliefs and tradition intertwined with folklore and legend. Cuisine varies between the many islands with festivals celebrating traditional crops or food happening throughout the year. George Washington once described the Bahamas as the 'Isles of Perpetual June' and it's easy to see why with a tropical climate and 300 days of sunshine per annum.

The Bahamas is best known for it's stunning clear waters and pristine beaches. The beautiful blue waters offer a visual treat for divers with blue holes, caves, steep drop-offs, sunken Spanish galleons and of course, thrilling shark diving to get your adrenaline pumping. The third largest barrier reef in the world (over 190 miles long) can also be found here and attracts snorkellers as well as divers. Year round water temperatures average 27 degrees celsius and the excellent visibility throughout will make you want to jump in and explore! There are many other pursuits to be enjoyed here with world class golf courses, kite surfing, fishing, kayaking, under water animal interraction and island hopping the most popular.
